Benton and Roberts Qualify for State Competiton

Please join Melissa ISD in recognizing Melissa High School students Alyssa Benton and Hannah Roberts for their recent, award winning vocal performances at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 25 Vocal & Ensemble Contest. The Region 25 event annually hosts participants from school districts, big and small, in the Collin and Grayson county area. Alyssa performed "Allerseelen" by Johann Baptist Strauss and Hannah performed "Ave María" by Johann Sebastian Bach. Both musicians earned a 1st Division Superior Rating for their performances. As a result, Alyssa and Hannah will represent Melissa High School at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin on May 29th and 31st. Congratulations Alyssa and Hannah. Go Cards!

Melissa Christian Church to Partner with Education Foundation

The Melissa Christian Church Women’s Group recently donated $6,000 to the Melissa Education Foundation for the purpose of providing four, $1,500 scholarships to be made available to 2010 graduates of Melissa High School.  In a letter to the Education Foundation, the Women’s Group indicated the intent to, “help applicants who expect to attend a trade school,  may not have the grades required to receive other scholarships, and who need financial assistance.”  The local Women’s Group is encouraging all interested graduates to apply for the scholarships through the Melissa Education Foundation. Although first priority will be given to trade school applicants, if all four scholarships are not initially awarded to qualifying trade school applicants, the available scholarships will be redirected to qualifying applicants who have been accepted into a full-time college or university program.

For more information about these and other scholarship opportunities, visit the Melissa Education Foundation website at www.melissaeducationfoundation.com or contact the Foundation Director by phone at  972-837-2411  972-837-2411 or by e-mail at lzadow@melissaisd.org .

Hasik and Ranallo Identified as Honors Scholars

Please join Melissa ISD in recognizing Hayley Hasik and Cole Ranallo as Texas A&M University at Commerce Honors College scholarship recipients. Upon graduation from Melissa High School in June 2010, and as incoming members of the Honors College, Hayley and Cole will join other high-performing students from around the nation in a unique educational environment built around honors coursework and a capstone thesis requirement. Students accepted into the Honors College must have an ACT score of 27 or higher or an SAT score of 1200 or higher, must graduate in the top 10% of their high school class, participate in a pre-acceptance interview, and commit to the academic rigors of a four year Honors College program.  In otherwords, this type of honor is not frivolously bestowed upon a student by a university, but rather is purposefully utilized to encourage and reward a select few students for their consistently outstanding educational work that spans 13 years of study prior to university application. Congratulations Hayley and Cole. Go Cards!

Area School Districts Move Forward to Dissolve Collin County Special Education Cooperative

As Melissa ISD continues the transition away from being a member district of the Collin County Special Education Cooperative (CCSEC), parents and community members may have questions both about the role the CCSEC has played in the past and what changes might be expected. Some of the more commonly asked questions have been addressed in a recent issue of the Cardinal Communique. Click here to read the communication in its entirety.

Certainly a short overview is not going to answer all the questions that parents and community members may have as the cooperative moves toward dissolution. As a result, please be encouraged to visit directly with your child's teacher and/or campus administrator to make sure that we are aware of individualized questions that we may need to address as the transition process continues.

Bush and Perdomo Recognized for Academic and Athletic Accomplishments

Two Melissa High School students, Aaron Bush and Harry Perdomo, were recently honored by the Texas High School Coaching Association. Bush was named to the association's 2009-2010 Academic All-State Football Team and Perdomo was named as an honorable mention Academic All-State football player.

Players from across the state were selected for these honors based on a point system that gave points for grade point average (GPA), class rank and SAT or ACT scores. Please join Melissa ISD in congratulating Aaron Bush and Harry Perdomo for being recognized from a pool of students across Texas for their efforts both inside and outside the classroom.

Melissa Middle School Recognized Nationally as a High Performing School

The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) recently recognized Melissa Middle School as a 2009 Just for the Kids high performing school in Texas. The NCEA used two measures of analysis: growth and college and career readiness. Melissa Middle School was specifically recognized for student growth and performance in Social Studies.

As a result of the high levels of student performance, Melissa Middle School will partner with other high performing schools across the nation to identify patterns of core practices that continually lead to successful student learning and performance. The NCEA is working toward developing a Core Practice Framework that schools across the nation will use to improve student performance.

Inclement Weather Procedures

On occasion, significant inclement weather can result in the cancellation of school, a late start to a school day, or an early dismissal of the school day. In the event of inclement weather, parents and students should be familiar with how Melissa ISD will communicate with the community at large. Should the need arise for early dismissal, late start, or school cancellation an attempt will be made to disseminate information as follows:
  1. A posting on the Melissa ISD website;
  2. The Cardinal Communique will be; and
  3. Notification of local broadcast media.
