Calling All Cardinals: 3rd Grade Needs Your Vote Today!

The students in Ms. Rose's third grade class recently entered a nation-wide video contest and have advanced to the final five. That means they are only one step away from winning $30,000 worth of cutting edge technology for the classrooms. Here's the catch. They are competing against schools from larger communities with a larger base of people to vote. As a result Ms. Rose's kids need all of Cardinal land and beyond to click here, log-on, and cast a vote for the video titled "We Use Technology." When watching the video, you will be spellbound by the student participation and amazed at the positive feedback they have received on the website from viewers across the nation. The quality of the video is unmatched. The only thing needed now is more votes. So, click here, log-on, and vote today. At last count, our kids had 313 votes and were only about 118 votes out of first place. Voting ends on December 4th, so rally the troops by encouraging all your friends, neighbors, and relatives to step up and cast a vote today! Let's pull together and show our support for our kids by gathering at least 2,000 more votes between now and December 4th. Go Cards!!!!

MISD to Begin Screening Visitors with RaptorWare System

For community planning purposes, please be advised that office staff at Melissa ISD campuses will utilize the months of November and December 2009, to begin implementing a new visitor check in and check out system designed to add another layer of security at the campus level. During the first two months of initiation, office staff will work closely with campus visitors to answer questions and train them on how the system will be utilized to guard entrance to the campus facility past the point of the school office. Basically, a visitor will use a system called RaptorWare® to scan his/her driver's license or state issued i.d., match the information against registered sex offender databases, and then print a photo identification badge. If the person is cleared for entry, the badge must be worn at all times while on campus and then returned to the school office upon checkout.

Beginning in January 2010, full implementation will be in place and all visitors and volunteers will need to check in through the RaptorWare® system before being granted access past the point of the school office. In the meantime, please be encouraged to visit with campus office staff about the new system. Additional information may also be reviewed at the RaptorWare® website by clicking here.

Novel H1N1 Flu Update

Seasonal flu and novel H1N1 flu remain a prevalent topic of attention and discussion both locally and nationally. Melissa ISD students and faculty are no exception and some students and staff have already been affected by these seasonal illnesses. However, the impact of seasonal illness has been minimal in Melissa schools to this point. Precautionary cleaning efforts remain in place and it is requested that parents whose children exhibit flu like symptons keep the student home from school until he or she is fever free for 48 hours or more. Preventive cleaning efforts remain in place and health services staff continue to monitor the impact of seasonal illness on a daily basis. First Graders to Help Donate One Million Books

First graders at McKillop Elementary are joining Super Bowl MVPs Peyton and Eli Manning and Scholastic Book Clubs to help donate one million books to disadvantaged children across the nation. Each first grade class has pledged to read 100 books as a part of the Scholastic Book Clubs' Classrooms Care program. As each class meets the reading goal, the Mannings, Scholastic, and several charity partners will distribute books to children who otherwise may not have access to quality reading resources.
